What sweat actually is, chemically

People talk about sweat as if it were acid. It is not. It is water with dissolved salt, and the salt load varies enormously between people: a study of nearly two thousand sweat tests found whole-body sweat sodium averaging around 42 millimoles per liter, with individuals ranging from about 17 to over 100 (Baker et al., Journal of Applied Physiology, 2022). It is usually close to neutral, though it can be as acidic as roughly pH 4. The person next to you on the rowing machine may genuinely be harder on metal than you are, and neither of you can tell by looking.

What matters for jewelry is the chloride riding along with that sodium. Stainless steel protects itself with an invisible chromium-oxide film, and chloride is the specific thing that breaks that film down locally. The Specialty Steel Industry of North America puts it plainly: localized corrosion of stainless steels “generally occurs in the presence of halide ions, typically chloride”, and the elements that buy back that resistance are chromium, molybdenum, tungsten and nitrogen. That is why 316L is the jewelry standard: its molybdenum is there for chloride resistance.

The same source explains the sneakier mechanism. In a crevice — under a band, inside a clasp, behind a bezel-set stone — trapped liquid becomes “depleted of oxygen, enriched in chlorides, and acidified.” A drop of sweat sitting in a hinge is a harsher environment than the same drop on an open surface, and it stays there long after the workout ends.

Sweat is not what breaks your jewelry. Friction is.

Here is the thing almost nobody says out loud: on a gold-toned piece, the steel underneath is not what fails. The color on top is, and that color is thinner than most people imagine. Under the FTC’s jewelry rules a piece may be described as “Gold Electroplate” with a minimum thickness of just 0.175 microns — roughly seven millionths of an inch. “Heavy Gold Electroplate” needs 2.5 microns. Those are legal floors rather than typical values, but they tell you the scale: a surface, not a shell.

A surface that thin does not care much about salt. It cares about abrasion. Even Europe’s nickel restriction concedes the point, requiring a coating to hold its nickel-release limit “for a period of at least two years of normal use of the product”. Note the phrasing: not forever, and only under normal use. Loaded reps are not normal use.

So the question is not “will this react with my sweat.” It is “what will this rub against, and how many times.”

The named injury is ring avulsion: a ring pulled suddenly and forcefully while your finger does not go with it. Two honest notes. It is uncommon — the same page puts it at roughly five percent of emergency-room arm and hand injury visits — so this is not a reason to be frightened. It is a reason to notice that the cost of being wrong is lopsided: removing a ring costs nothing, and the injury can cost a finger. A chain sits precisely where a sports-bra band and strap cross, which is why one worn underneath shows its wear at the nape and across the collarbone rather than on the pendant. An anklet sits where the shoe collar strikes on every stride and where a bike pedal passes on every rotation. None of that is about sweat; all of it is about contact. If you can name the surface a piece will rub against, you already know whether to wear it.

The five-minute post-workout reset

This is the part that actually changes how long a piece lasts, and it takes less time than unlacing your shoes. It follows directly from the crevice mechanism above: sweat that dries in place leaves its salt behind, concentrated, in exactly the gaps you cannot reach. Rinsing while it is still liquid is the whole trick. The British Stainless Steel Association’s maintenance guidance is the same routine jewelers give you — “soap, detergent or dilute ammonia solution in warm clean water… then rinse in clean water and dry” — and it warns against chloride-containing cleaners, worth remembering before you reach for a wipe.

  1. Rinse under warm water first. Before soap, before anything. You are washing salt away while it is still dissolved.
  2. Add a drop of mild soap and a soft cloth. A soft-bristle brush for the places a cloth cannot reach: behind a stone, inside a clasp, around a hinge.
  3. Rinse again in clean water. Soap residue holds moisture, which defeats the point.
  4. Dry completely. This is the step people skip and the one that matters most. Get inside the clasp and behind the setting; a corner of a towel or a few seconds of air will do it.
  5. Store dry, not damp. A gym bag is a warm, humid box. Wet jewelry sealed into one overnight is the worst-case version of everything described above.

When to simply take it off

  • A diagnosed nickel allergy. The American Academy of Dermatology’s advice is to wear only jewelry that is nickel-free or made from metals such as surgical-grade stainless steel, 18-, 22- or 24-karat yellow gold, pure sterling silver, or platinum. Note that surgical-grade stainless steel is on that list because it releases very little nickel, not because it contains none.
  • A piercing that is still healing. Not because of the sweat, which the piercing profession says is fine, but because a gym is full of pressure, jostling and shared surfaces.
  • Anything gold-plated over brass. Plenty of gold-tone jewelry, including some pieces in our own catalog, is plated brass rather than plated steel. Brass is a copper alloy, and once the plating wears thin the copper meets sweat directly — that is the classic green mark.
