In the United States, the FTC's jewelry guidance treats it as deceptive to hide a treatment that is not permanent or that creates special care needs — and the GIA and gem-trade bodies consider disclosure of turquoise stabilization and color enhancement mandatory. "Stabilized" on a tag is a sign of an honest seller, not a red flag.
  • Mind the price. If a large, richly colored "natural turquoise" piece costs a few dollars, the math does not work. Genuine natural turquoise is scarce; a bargain that good is usually stabilized, reconstituted, or an imitation.

The metal matters as much as the stone

Turquoise is rarely worn on its own — it sits in a setting, and the honesty of that setting is its own question. This is where a lot of affordable jewelry gets loose with language, so here is how we describe ours, and how I would want any brand to describe theirs.

  • "18k gold-plated" is not solid gold. Plating is a thin layer of gold over a base metal. Our turquoise pieces are 18k gold-plated over a stainless steel base with a PVD coating — durable and tarnish-resistant for everyday wear, but plated, and I will always call it plated rather than "gold."
  • "Hypoallergenic" needs a real material behind it. Surgical 316L stainless steel is a low-nickel-release alloy — that is why it suits most sensitive skin — but low-release is not the same as "nickel-free." If you have a diagnosed nickel allergy, that distinction is worth knowing.
  • A sparkling clear stone is usually not a diamond. On jewelry at this price, a brilliant colorless accent is cubic zirconia (CZ), a simulated stone — lovely and legitimate, but CZ, not a diamond, and it should be labeled that way.

None of this is a knock on plated jewelry or CZ. They are honest, everyday materials. The point is that the label should match the material — on the stone and on the metal.

How to care for turquoise so it keeps its color

  • Keep it dry and last on, first off. Put turquoise on after lotion, perfume, and sunscreen, and take it off before showering, swimming, or the gym. Even stabilized stones absorb less oil when they meet less of it.
  • Wipe it after wear. A soft, dry cloth to clear skin oils is enough. Skip ultrasonic cleaners, steam, and harsh solvents — they can damage the stone or its stabilizing resin.
  • Store it cool and out of the sun. Heat and prolonged sunlight can dry a stone out or make an oiled or waxed one "sweat" and cloud over time. A pouch in a drawer is ideal.
